Bylaw planning for Animal Control takeover

They don’t know how yet, but By-Law will be taking over Animal Control from the SPCA.

RCMP Superintendent Bob Couture says it’s a little too early for an exact model.

“We will develop a plan and formula using resources and equipment and personnel to provide the same level of service to ensure that we have a effective following of the by-law within our community,” says Couture.

“When you look at traditional models that are in most municipalities across the country today, in most cases, the city has taken that responsibility on it’s own,” he added.

The city is legally required to provide animal control.

The SPCA said yesterday that it was terminating it’s contract as of July 1st.

It’s been doing animal control since 1997, and says it can’t anymore because it’s not getting enough funding.
