Study: Higher risk of spill compared to Enbridge numbers

According to a new study, spill estimates are higher than those Enbridge submitted to the Northern Gateway review panel.

The spill risk study was done by Tom Gunton, the director of the resource and environmental planning program at Simon Fraser University and a former deputy environment minister.

He says his team used a U.S. government model for projecting spill risk.

It estimates a pipeline spills on land to happen 15 to 16 times per year – Enbridge estimates it to happen once every two years.

The study is dismissed in a letter to the Canadian Press from the President of Enbridge.

John Carruthers says it doesn’t reflect the new technology proposed for the line.

The panel reviewing the pipeline is supposed to finish the hearing’s questioning phase this week.
