A protest is scheduled today in Sarnia Ontario as a two-day national conference on oil sands kicks off.
The conference is meant to bring together industry leaders, experts and decision-makers to discuss the production of value-added products from the oil sands.
First Nation and environment activists are gathering to protest Alberta oil sands development and proposed pipelines.
They have planned a rally and water ceremony at city hall (starting at 9AM Mountain Time), and then a march to the conference.
The rally’s organizers say the First Nation is already surrounded by 60 industrial facilities that include petro-chemical plants and refineries.
Last August, the National Energy Board approved Enbridge’s request to reverse an oil sand line from Sarnia, Ontario to an area near Hamilton.
Next, it wants to reverse a line from there to Montreal to eventually ship bitumen to Canada’s east coast refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick.
