The drop in day shelter is being used more and more these days.

The Centre of Hope says an average week will see between 175 to 200 different people.

In the years first 3 months it handed out about 1,740 packs of noodles and oatmeal which is a 97-percent increase over last year.

It gave out over 33-hundred pairs of socks – almost 1-thousand more.

It also washed 841 loads of laundry, 182 more than last year and ran a shower over 15-hundred times or about 578 more than the same 3 months last year.

Fund Coordinator Vanja Taha says the increased numbers is somewhat attributed to newcomers.

In a week in February it saw 181 people, and 55 of them had been here less than a year.

122 of them were men and 59 were woman.

The average age of a man at the centre is 42 and 36 for a woman

Only 27 of those were between the ages of 18 and 25.

It accepts money donations along with gently used clothing and shoes, toiletry, laundry detergent, feminine products

It isĀ  “Giving Light to Homelessness” week, and the Centre is putting on a sleepover this weekend to help raise awareness.
