Cleaning up oil sands tailings is going to be harder to do than originally thought.
The province’s energy regulator says none of the oilsands companies that are under tailings reduction rules have met the targets.
There are many reasons why, including issues with new and untested technologies to poor planning for the weather.
Companies have been given more time to turn the tailings into surfaces that are solid enough to drive on.
The ERCB isn’t going to penalize any of the companies because it says they’re working hard to find solutions.
But that could change if companies still have the same problem when their next reports are due in 2 years.
