State of Local Emergency declared in Wood Buffalo

The municipality has declared a state of local emergency because of flooding of the Hangingstone River and flood concerns in the Clearwater River.

It has issued a mandatory evacuation order for the Ptarmigan Trailer Park in Waterways; the rest of that area and Draper are under voluntary evacuation notices too.

“We’re taking this special measure to protect residents’ safety and ensure the swiftest possible response to the flood,” said Mayor Melissa Blake. “We encourage residents to cooperate with local authorities and stay upbeat during these trying circumstances.”

The declaration allows the city to enforce mandatory evacuations.

The Hangingstone River is still under a flood warning, while the Clearwater is under a flood watch.

The Draper and Waterways areas are also still under boil water advisories.

Keyano College will remain closed for the rest of the day and tomorrow as well.

Anyone who is evacuated should report to the Frank Lacroix Arena in Beacon Hill.

Everyone is advised to avoid rivers, valleys, and low lying areas – shorelines are unstable.
