Land-use bylaw for special event permits approved; excludes schools and religious groups

After being amended the land use bylaw for special event permits has been approved by council 9 to 2.

It specifys the rules of having an event on private property.

The ammendment removed schools and religious groups from the bylaw to encourage them to continue having events.

Mayor Melissa Blake says trying to respond to each special event request would have become unrealistic.

“I think its the fairest that we can be given the concerns that were identified last fall, without having the one of scenario where we say ‘each time we have an event we have to give it independent consideration.'”

Councillor Colleen Tatum was one of 2 who voted against it saying not enough groups are being looked out for,

“Yes we’re excluding the schools, and we’re excluding the religious facilities, but there are so many other events that I can think of that we’re putting jeopardy.”

Councillor Phil Meagher says it’s not perfect, but it’s a good start.

“I think it’s better to have something in place,” he adds, “I just don’t think we can spend valuable time in council debating every little one off.”

It will go into effect September 11th.
