Half Marathon coming to Fort McMurray in September, along with Our Lady Peace and Sloan

A brand new event will help kick off the downtown redevelopment in September.

The City Centre McMurray Half Marathon will happen from September 13 to 15.

The weekend will open with Rock 97.9 presenting Our Lady Peace at the outdoor stage on MacDonald Island Park on Friday, and Sloan on Sunday.

Deputy Mayor Sheldon Germain says an event like this boosts community spirit.

“I think it’s going to be a wonderful event to bring people back to our city centre, and make sure that they get to do something athletic and take advantage of our river valleys and the nice views of downtown,” he said.

Organizers hope that it can be a full marathon next year, and a qualifying event in 2015.

Germain explained that thinking.

“There’s a lot of people in Fort McMurray that do travel to qualifier events. If they have a qualifier right here in Fort McMurray that will help them qualify for Boston and other marathons,” he said.

The half marathon, along with 10 km, 5 km, and 3 km races will be run on Sunday, with the Sloan concert afterwards.

The Sloan concert is free, but you’ll need tickets to see Our Lady Peace.

Registration for the race is now open, and tickets for OLP will go on sale July 4.
