Kinder Morgan can restart Trans Mountain pipeline after leak shut it down

UPDATE:

A federal energy agency has given Kinder Morgan the green light to restart the Trans Mountain pipeline after it found a second oil spill in as many weeks.

About 4,000 litresĀ  or upt o 25 barrels spilled near Hope B.C. Wednesday, but a cause hasn’t been determined.

The National Energy Board told the company to clean up the contaminated soil and put a steel sleeve on the affected pipeline.

The company will also have to inspect it weekly until it replaces the section entirely.

2 weeks ago, another leak was found in the same line that spill several barrels of oil, but about 120 clicks north of Hope near Merritt.

BACKGROUND:

A leak has been found on Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline – the second in two weeks.

The leak was found on the line about 150 clicks east of Vancouver in the Hope area and the line has been shut down while crews investigate.

Staining was found in the soil around it, but there’s no word yet on how much leaked.

The company says it’s following the same procedures used June 12th when a few barrels leaked from the same line near Meritt, about 120 click north of Hope.

Today, Kinder Morgan also planned an open house in suburban Vancouver on its planned expansion of the line.

It would triple it’s capacity and would include shipments of diluted bitumen.

It currently ships 300-thousand barrels per day of different kinds of petroleum products from Alberta to B.C. and Washington State.
