UPDATE: Reaction from a friend of the man who died at Syncrude Monday

Syncrude's Aurora oilsands project.

Occupational Health and Safety says a 28 year old AECON employee died at Syncrude’s Aurora oil sands mine north of town.

The man died on scene yesterday, after being pinned between a piece of heavy equipment and a truck around 1:45PM.

Rick Lalonde was a good friend of the man.

“He was the greatest guy I know, just a great human being,” he said. “Best friend, great people person; I don’t even know how to explain. Great kid, great kid.”

“He didn’t do anything wrong to anybody,” he added, “he was born and raised in this town.”

“It’s got to stop happening up here. We don’t go to work to get hurt,” he pauses and then added “I’m at a loss of words.”

Lalonde says he’s lost too many friends, so he’s putting down the tools for good to become a safety rep.

“There’s something I can do here, I can totally help this situation along.”

Syncrude says next of kin have been notified, and both OHS, and RCMP, are on site.

Further information isn’t being released as the investigation is on-going.
