Maximum penalty for MLA Mike Allen is $3,000 fine and year in jail

U.S. prosecutors expect to decide by tomorrow whether to lay charges against Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo MLA Mike Allen.

The Edmonton Journal spoke with Attorney Sara Grewing and she says he’s looking at possible gross misdemeanor charges.

A Minnesota statute prohibits a person from engaging in prostitution or hiring someone for the purpose of it in a public place, which by the state’s law includes locations such as hotel rooms.

Grewing couldn’t speak to the specifics of Allen’s case, but depending on them, the MLA could face a minimum $1,500 U.S. fine, or a max of a year in a low security jail and a $3,000 fine.

Allen was arrested on suspicion in engaging in prostitution while south of the border attending the Council of State Governments Midwest.
