Province responds to U.S. State Dept.'s environmental impact assessment

The provincial government only raised a few concerns in its official response to the U.S. State Department’s environmental impact assessment of the Keystone X.L. oil sands pipeline.

According to the Edmonton Journal, Internation Affairs Minister Cal Dallas says the assessment raised some questions and the Alberta Government gave answers to information it found was slightly off.

The response was sent Friday to the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

The assessment was released in March, and found the pipeline would have little impact on the growth of the oilsands and it’s greenhouse gas emissions.

In June, President Barack Obama said he would reject the pipeline if it would add to carbon pollution.

The assessment’s response included an issue with a figure on the specific gravity of diluted bitumen as well as a calculation on the province’s corrosion-caused oil pipeline failures.

The majority of the response reiterated the province’s environmental goals with a section dedicated to emission reduction efforts.

The Obama Administration is expected to make a decision on the $5.3-billion line from Alberta to Gulf Coast refineries later this year.
