Out of thousands of environmental problems linked to Alberta’s oil sands, a study found less than a percent have had anything done about it.
Since 1996, independent researchers Peter Lee and Kevin Timoney have created a database of over 9,000 environmental incidents.
They cover everything from leaks into the Athabasca River to unregistered waste sites to excessive smokestack emissions.
The study finds Alberta’s records on environmental contamination aren’t finished and are full of errors.
It says enforcement action was only taken in less than a percent of more than 4,000 incidents where a facility broke an operating condition.
Timoney says the same problems happened time after time, suggesting environmental performance isn’t getting better.
