TransCanada says Keystone X.L. will create 20,000 jobs; President Obama disagrees

TransCanada says its proposed Keystone X.L. oil sands project will create about 20,000 jobs, but President Barack Obama says that’s an unrealistic number.

In an interview with the New York Times this weekend, Obama said the project might create 2,000 construction jobs but afterwards leave only 50 to 100.

TransCanada spokesperson James Millar says there’s no reason for the company to inflate its numbers since it has to answer to its board and shareholders.

He also noted that Obama’s comments were aimed at his Republican opponents.

Earlier this year, Obama said he will evaluate the project on whether it significantly adds to green house gas emissions and will make a decision on the Alberta to Gulf Coast pipeline later this year,

He rejected the $7.6-billion line last year, but told the pipeline company it could file a new application with a different route that would address Nebraska’s environmental concerns.

Millar says TransCanada is confident the pipeline will get the green light.
