CNRL's spill a good time to assess province's new energy regulator: Pembina Institute

The Pembina Institute says Canadian Natural Resource Ltd.’s on-going oil spill is the first chance to see how the province’s new energy regulator is handling things.

The environmental think tank’s Chris Severson-Baker says the Alberta Energy Regulator can show the world that the province is tightening controls on the oil sands as the industry grows.

The spill is on one of the company’s sites located on the Cold Lake weapons range near the Saskatchewan border.

He says the previous agency4 years ago, let CNRL resume production after a similar spill even though a cause was never pin pointed.
