New study says Keystone XL wouldn't impact greenhouse gas emissions

A new study says the Keystone XL pipeline would not significantly increase greenhouse gas emissions from the United States.

The report from Colorado-based IHS says if the U.S. doesn’t approve the pipeline, it won’t affect the expansion of the oil sands either.

It says that the big beneficiary of Keystone XL being rejected would be Venezuela, whose heavy oil would replace the Canadian imports.

But Venezuelan oil has just as high a carbon footprint as oil sands crude.

U.S. President Barack Obama has recently said he won’t approve the oil sands pipeline if it increases carbon emissions.
