Canadian Natural Resource Limited says it will have a demo bio-refinery in operation by the end of the year

The oil sands company says it will use algae, treated waste water and CO2 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as make biofeul and products such as livestock feed.

It says each tonne of algae can decrease emissions by 1.8 tonnes and will make over 660 pounds of biofuel and over 1500 pounds of biomass product.

Project partners will invest about $19-million over 3 years.

The demo refinery will be built at CNRL’s Primrose site, but it’s also looking to build a commercial one at it’s Horizon site.

It wants to pilot a commercial and sustainable solution to convert CO2 and other sources of pollutants into biofuel.

VP of CNRL’s Technology Development Joy Romero says  the “Algae Project” has the potential to reduce emissions by 15%.

He says the Primrose site has potential of reducing emissions by 15%, and Horizon by 30%.

He says overall, the company expects to reduce over 1.5MM tonnes of emissions which equals taking 300,000 cars off the road.

The results of the pilot will be shared with other producers through Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance.
