Steve Kelly to run as "working-class" candidate in upcoming election

16 year resident Steve Kelly says he’ll be running for Council in the October election.

The heavy equipment operator for Suncor made the announcement today and says he’ll be the voice of the working-class people.

He was born in Newfoundland, raised in Calgary and now lives here with his wife and local business owner Michelle, and his two kids aged 6 and 4.

Kelly is President of the Wood Buffalo District Labour Council and an active member of uniFOR Local 707 (formally CEP Local 707).

He says he’s worked for a variety of local non-profit organizations.

He was the former Director for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 165, past President and VP for the Fort McMurray SPCA, Director and Chair for Volunteer Wood Buffalo, a “Big” for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Wood Buffalo, a pet therapy volunteer for the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre, a community campaign representative for the United Way of Wood Buffalo and many annual events like clean up initiatives, parades and Arctic Games to name a few.

He says accountability is important.

“I will do my best to represent the individuals of our community,” he continues, “I understand making those decisions will come with tremendous responsibility. Being able to account for the decisions I make, and ensure that I am doing so with the region and its inhabitants in mind, are my main priorities.”

Election Day is October 21st.

Incumbent Collen Tatum, and newcomers Jon Tupper and Tyran Ault have all announced they’ll be in the running.

Mayor Melissa Blake also said she’ll seek another term.
