Green Party: Ottawa spending $120m to support proposed Northern Gateway pipeline

The leader of the Green Party says Ottawa is spending taxpayer money for at least two studies to lay groundwork for the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline.

Elizabeth May says leaked federal documents show $120-million is going towards research into spill disasters along Enbridge’s planned route.

She says it should have been done and paid for by the pipeline company.

She says it looks like the Tories are building a safety infrastructure but before the federal environmental review panel has made a final decision.

The proposed  project would see a 1,200-kilometre line carrying 550,000 barrels of crude from Bruderheim, A.B.  to a tanker port in Kitimat, B.C., for shipment to Asian markets.

A twin line would carry a diluent for heavy bitumen back to Alberta.

Conservative government is spending 120-million dollars on research to support the Northern Gateway pipeline.
