CMHC: RMWB's housing starts up 255% in August

Fort McMurray saw a 255% increase in housing starts in August compared to last year.

The Canada Housing and Mortgage Corporation says the month saw 142 new houses compared to the 40 the year before.

Single units were up 77% to 46 started and 96 multiple units were started which equals a 380% increase.

Compared to the same time last year, the region hiked new houses by 112% in the past 12 month to total 683 started houses.

The Ottawa-based federal agency says new projects in urban areas country-wide slipped by 5.8% from July.

Mostly because of fewer multiple-unit projects, such as condos or apartments.

But, CMHC says the country’s trend continued to be somewhat stable for a sixth straight month.
