Kearl boosts production to 80,000 bpd

Imperial Oil’s Kearl oil sands project is now producing 80,000 barrels per day.

On Friday, CEO Rick Kruger said the company was producing about 43,000 bpd in August, and is on-track to reach full capacity of 110,000 bpd in 2013.

On Wednesday, a spokesperson said two production trains were running, and a third is close to starting up.

Later expansions at the site about 75 kilometres north-east of the city will boost production to more than 300-thousand.

Exxon owns 30 percent of the project with Imperial holding the other 70.

It has access to 4.6 billion barrels of resource that should last 40 years.

It’s the first mining operation without an upgrader.
