Syncrude says employees and their families have planted nearly 1,000 new trees and shrubs at its 57 hectare Sandhill Fen

The oil sands company celebrated its annual Tree Planting Day for the second straight year at the fen on Saturday.

The Sandhill Fen is the industry’s first full-scale research pilot to reconstruct the unique wetland.

It’s built on top of the company’s former East Mine where reclamation efforts have been taking place for about a decade.

So far this year, Syncrude’s planted over 305,000 tree and shrub seedlings and over 7-million since restoration work began in the ’80s.
