Wood Buffalo RCMP's Freedom of the City Parade runs through downtown on Saturday

The Wood Buffalo RCMP Detachment is continuing its Centennial Celebrations this year with the Freedom of the City Parade on Saturday.

The parade will feature hundreds of officers in tradtional dress, along with police vehicles including a helicopter.

Set-up for the parade starts at 9 am, with the festivities starting at 1.

The freedon of the city gives the a specific military or police unit the right for all time to march through the city bearing arms and with colours flying – the Guidon.

The Guidon is a somewhat small flag and a symbolic piece of RCMP history.

It rarely leaves the RCMP’s National Headquarters in Ottawa.

It will cause some traffic disruptions around the downtown core between Friday night and Saturday afternoon:

No Parking
A parking ban with be in effect starting Friday evening (September 20) and will go until approximately mid-afternoon on Saturday (September 21,) on Franklin Avenue and MacDonald Avenue, between the intersections at Main Street and Hardin Street.

Road Closures
Between the hours of 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM on Saturday (September 21) Franklin Avenue and MacDonald Avenue, between the intersections at Main Street and Hardin Street will be closed to regular vehicle traffic.

Traffic Disruptions
Main Street, Manning Avenue, Morrison Street, Franklin Avenue, and Hardin Street will all experience intermittent traffic disruptions causing possible delays between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, on Saturday (September 21.) These streets are part of the marching routes and the expected traffic disruptions are in addition to the previously mentioned road closures.
