Greenpeace: CN Rail looking to ship bitumen to Prince Rupert, BC

According to Greenpeace, CN Rail is looking to ship Alberta bitumen to Prince Rupert BC in quantities that would match the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline.

The environmental group says through the Access to Information Act, it got internal memos from Natural Resources that show the rail carrier raised the proposal last March.

The memos say CN was being urged to raise the proposal by Chinese-owned Nexen.

A researcher for Greenpeace says the rail pitch looks to be another plan, in case Northern Gateway isn’t approved.

A CN spokesperson told The Canadian Press that no specific crude-by-rail project to Prince Rupert was discussed at the March meeting.
