Boutilier responds to Thomas attack

City Council hopeful Guy Boutilier is responding to claims he’s a “fly-in, fly-out” candidate.

Incumbent Russell Thomas published those statements in his blog yesterday, where he also says Boutilier’s statements about “inmates running the asylum” were inflammatory.

Boutilier says he’s in Edmonton for part of each week getting care for his son with special needs, and isn’t doing much flying either.

“I’ve got 400,000 kilometres on my car,” he continues, “I don’t think anyone should have to apologize for getting the best care for their son.  Any parent in this community knows how important they are; they’re our life.”

He says his comments about “inmates running the asylum,” weren’t intended to insult city employees.

“Our front-line citizens that are working at city hall are doing a very good job, but somehwere there’s a disconnect as it goes up the line.”

Boutilier says there are current issues that he thinks people aren’t being heard on.

“I’m still trying to find out who recommended the $77-million foot bridge,” he adds, “it’s bizarre to me, no one seems to know.  And so, citizens are saying to me, ‘we think it can be utilized in a better manner.'”

Boutilier was defeated in last year’s provincial election by MLA Mike Allen, and was the first mayor of the amalgamated municipality.
