Ministers heading to EU to stop proposed resolution impacting oilsands

The Premier is sending two senior ministers to Europe to stop a proposed resolution that would create penalties and stiff regulatory hurdles for EU countries wanting oilsands oil.

Starting Saturday, International Relations Minister Cal Dallas and the Environment Minister will visit capitals from Sweden to Romania to speak with decision-makers about the EU’s Fuel Quality Directive.

Before the end of the year, EU environment ministers are expected to vote on the directive, and if approved, would declare oilsands oil 22% more carbon intensive than conventional oil.

Dallas says that number is inaccurate and although Alberta doesn’t ship to Europe, there’s worry other places could adopt similar rules based on faulty data.
