City spends $69,000 on videos to help raise voter turnout

With voter turnout rates hitting close to rock bottom, the city is hoping its “This is your space” campaign helps attract more potential voters.

And it’s invested heavily, spending $69,000 in the creation of five videos for it.

Though all the filming was done locally, a part of that cost was paid to the city of Vaughan, Ontario, who intially came up with the campaign for its 2010 election.

The city says it used the campaign because Vaughan has many voter-related issues that Fort McMurray does, like an increasing immigrant population, and a high rate of turnover.

In the last municipal election, only 21% of the population came out to vote.

That number fell even lower in the by-election, when only 9% of eligible voters did so.

As a part of the most recent Municipal Development Plan, the city has made increasing voter turnout one of its mandates.

The Wood Buffalo region goes to the polls on October 21st.
