Western Canada's first crude-by-rail terminal starts up next month

Western Canada’s first crude-by-rail terminal is set to start moving 50,000 barrels a day to the U.S. next month according to Reuters.

The terminal is in Bruderheim and the operator Canexus says it will move 100,000 by the second half of 2014.

This project is the first of many that have emerged throughout the country to alleviate pipeline congestion, but, shipping by rail is more costly.

The terminal can load up to 120 rail cars a day, and by the end of next year Western Canada will open up enough projects to ship 550,000 bpd.

The company says it already has customers committed for about 35% of its capacity, and it expects to have 70-80% by the end of this year.
