Driver-run taxi protest continues today over new vehicle-for-hire bylaw

Day 2 of the driver-run cab protest over the new vehicle for hire by law is underway, but Access Taxi and Wood Buffalo Co-Op are both trying to pick people up.

They say some of their drivers are taking part in the protest, but it still has drivers showing up for work – whereas City Cabs, United Cabs and Sun Taxi have confirmed their drivers aren’t working at all.

Access says it’s still fulfilling contracts, charges, and is trying to get drivers to people looking to get to the hospital or airport.

We were told this morning another slow-down was planned – which yesterday was a fleet of cabs driving 30 kilometres an hour down 63.

But, they planned to go from the airport to Syncrude, but they ended up pulling a u-turn at the TaigaNova lights.

RCMP say they’re monitoring and engaging with the drivers.

The by-law includes things like increased licensing fees and a newly appointed Chief Taxi Inspector.
