Unannounced pothole work slows southbound 63 down to a crawl

Drivers on highway 63 had some surprise congestion today.

Around 4:00, crews started to repair potholes north of the city, around the Taiga Nova Industrial Park.

That reduced southbound 63 down to one lane as the afternoon rush started to hit, and continued until about 6:30, when both lanes were restored.

The work caused a back up all the way past the the Suncor overpass, with some drivers having delays of over an hour on their commute home from work.

Alberta Transportation has previously said that highway construction work won’t happen during peak traffic hours.

We have contacted Alberta Transportation, and are awaiting comment.
