New Christina Gordon Elementary School to open in 2016

Construction is beginning on another major project in Fort McMurray.

MLA Don Scott was on hand to break ground yesterday on what will be a new public school for students in kindergarten to grade six.

Christina Gordon Elementary School will be built in Timberlea and have capacity for 600 students.

He says Fort McMurray’s growth is almost unparalleled.

“We need to make sure we have the a schools, the infrastructure to meet a growing Alberta,” he continues, “no place is that felt more then Fort McMurray; we are one of the fastest growing municipalities in North America.”

He says new schools can’t come soon enough.

“We have other schools on the way and there’s going to be more in the future as well, he recalls, “there was a remark made yesterday that we have about 1,200 births a year and that’s the equivalent of a lot of kindergarten classes.”

Scott says with new schools coming, his number one priority is now on traffic.

“When people are sitting in traffic, they’re feeling extremely frustrated as am I, because I live here,” he laughs, “but there’s going to be some short term pain right now for some long term gain in the future. We’re getting a lot of things caught up.”

The new school will fit about 600 students, and is scheduled to open in 2016.

It’s part of 30 schools the province promised to build earlier this yer.

The PCs say $1.4 billion will be spent on schools over the next three years.
