Despite environmentalist opposition, Mulcair supports west-east pipeline

Federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair says he still supports a west to east oil pipeline even though environmentalists are turning against it, according to the Globe and Mail.

A report from the Pembina Institute yesterday said TransCanada’s proposed Energy East pipeline would add more greenhouse gas emissions than the Keystone XL pipeline to the United States would.

But Mulcair says a domestic pipeline would keep jobs in Canada and do a better job on Canadian energy security.

Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver says the Pembina report is flawed because it assumes if Energy East doesn’t get built, the bitumen that would flow through it won’t be extracted at all.
