City Council supports idea of Fort McMurray to Peace River corridor

A study on a Fort McMurray to Peace River Transportation and Utility Corridor is being supported by Council.

The city though isn’t obligated to finance anything for the Northern Alberta Development Council who’s looking to create a cost and benefit report.

It could include rail, road, oil and gas pipelines, power, water and phone lines.

The development council says the report will influence possible long-term development as well as reduce environmental impact.

City staff says it would be a necessary route to Fort McKay, Fort Chipewyan and much of the region’s oil sands development.

So far, three municipal districts has given support: Spirit River, Peace and Clear Hills County.

The development council says it’s also looking for input from other community stakeholders.
