RMWB grants Legion $495,000 to help with upgrades

The Legion’s going forward with revitalizing its building, about 3 months after it voted in new executives.

Council agreed to give it $495,000 in funding to help the branch out, after recently proclaiming financial issues.

Mayor Melissa Blake says the money will help it offer more to the community.

“It’s really tough to get out of the gate if you don’t have the structural foundation that you need,” she said.

The Legion says it’s not just a place for vets and RCMP, but for non-profit organizations and the general community.

Blake says this is a reset button for them.

“I expect that we’ll some very positive things for that facility in the future, that are not isolated in who they serve, absolutely it’s a facility for veterans, there’s no question,” she continues, “but there’s so many crossovers happening in the community that you cannot deny the accessibility to everybody in the region.”

Some of the upgrades include bringing its electrical and HVAC system up to code, as well as renos to the kitchen and upstairs banquet hall.

The building’s hosted the legion in Waterways for the past 37 years.

It says it has to bring the electrical and HVAC systems up to code.

Some other upgrades include inside renos, but also working with Communities in Bloom to design a park at the cenotaph, upgrading the cenotaph and moving the army tank.
