South Portland, Maine city council backs oilsands ban

South Portland city council in Maine is moving forward with a proposal that would ban bulk loading of oilsand crude into marine tankers there.

It passed a first reading of it last night 6-1, in a community centre where about 500 people showed up.

The meeting was supposed to be Monday but was postponed because there were too many people who showed up.

Opponents of the proposed ban say environmentalists concerns that oilsands are dangerous to ship and hard to clean if spilled, are inflated.

A planning board will review the propsal on the 15th, and a final vote is on the 21st.
