OHS cracking down on sand and gravel crushing sites

Occupational Health and Safety says it’s inspecting sand and gravel crushing worksites to make sure their safety is up to par.

After two deaths at gravel sites in the province this year, the inspections are building on last year, when 64 worksites were looked at in eight weeks.

OHS inspectors say the most common violation was inadequate equipment guards.

This year, officers can ticket workers or employers on-the-spot for different violations, with fines of up $500.

Those violations include not wearing PPE, not operating equipment properly, and working without proper certifications.
