Municipal officials are ordering the owners of a condemned condominium complex to tear it down.

In 2011 more than 300 people were evacuated in the middle of the night after an engineer’s report flagged structural concerns over the seven-building Penhorwood Apartments. The complex was only seven years old at the time.

On Friday, a Safety Codes Officer issued the order for the demolition, which has to be done by Sept. 30.

“Based on the current condition of the buildings, we determined that they need to come down as soon as possible,” said Safety Codes Manager Damon McGillivray. “The order was issued to ensure public safety.”

Tenants are still paying paying mortgages and legal fees for a $60 million lawsuit that includes the RMWB and developer as defendants.  The order is being served to the Condominium Corporation and its owners.
