UPDATE: B.C. man dies after workplace incident at Stoney Creek Plaza

A man is dead after a day on the job in Timberlea. Wood Buffalo RCMP was called to the Stoney Creek Plaza at 100 Riverstone Ridge, just before 4 p.m. yesterday.

Police say the 54-year-old B.C. man working for Marathon Ventilation was operating a piece of equipment on a rooftop, when he was crushed by it. Occupational Health and Safety is investigating the incident.

“Two workers were installing a ventilation unit at the Stoney Creek complex and they had been maintaining verbal communication between the roof and the third floor when the worker on the roof stopped talking,” says Spokesperson Brooks Merritt. “The second worker went to the roof to find out why and discovered the first worker had been pinned underneath the air unit.”

Paramedics rushed the man to the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre where he died.

A number of incidents have occured at the plaza during construction. Last October a 22-year-old from Calgary died when he fell down an unfinished elevator shaft while trespassing in the early morning hours. He was not a worker on site. In August 2013, a man was rushed to hospital when a hose on a concrete pumping truck ruptured and sprayed concrete onto his face. The truck was pumping concrete into a parkade.

Former Minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour, Thomas Lukaszuk, chose the plaza as a location to make a provincial announcement when he was in town this April. He held a news conference for the Occupational Health and Safety website’s new features, which includes detailed safety records of more than 150,000 employers across Alberta.
