Federal government considering lifetime bans on TFWs

Ottawa is looking at lifetime bans for bosses who abuse the Temporary Foreign Worker program.

In a discussion paper posted on a federal website, the government proposes the bans, larger fines and longer moratoriums that keep businesses from applying to the program.

It says the names of the banned employers would be made public. Only four companies are on the so-called TFW blacklist, and no others have been added since June.

The federal government is asking stakeholders to submit feedback until October 16, but some are already wondering why the measures haven’t been introduced already. Premier Jim Prentice plans on discussing the TFW program during his first meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
