Prentice announces plans for new accountability bill

Premier Jim Prentice says he’s creating a brand new accountability bill for the province.

He says it’s another step in cleaning up the government’s reputation.

“I promised that I would improve accountability and good governance. That I would put an end to the so called “culture of entitlement.” By creating the conditions to ensure that the highest ethical standards of accountability would take root amongst those who serve the public,” he said.

He says he’ll involve a broad number of sources when he drafts it.

“So work on the new accountability legislation will begin in earnest immediately. I will be working hand-in-hand with the ethics commissioner, with the legislative assembly, with the opposition parties, with others such as the chief electoral officer, the public service commissioner, and the ombudsman,” he said.

Prentice says the new legislation will make rules against sole sourcing contracts and large severance payments.

He also talked about ensuring people would be hired for their skills, not their political affiliation.

NDP Leader Brian Mason says Prentice is only introducing it now that his “favourites” are already in place.

Wildrose finance critic Rob Anderson also talked “favourites,” saying Prentice has already taken advantage of promoting them.

Prentice says he plans to table it when the leg sits in November.
