First steam at Husky Sunrise Energy

An in situ site 60 kilometres northeast of Fort McMurray started steam operations.

Last week, Husky Energy announced it began steam operations at the Sunrise Energy Project.

“The production of steam is the last major milestone before first oil,” said CEO Asim Ghosh in a news release. “As a longer-life project, Sunrise will deliver steady production and cash flow to support our expansive portfolio of projects.”

Phase 1 of the project is set to produce 60,000 barrels per day through two processing plants. The first 30,000 barrels per day plant is expected to start production at the end of the first quarter of 2015.

The site has estimated reserves of 3.7 billion barrels.
