B.C. government expected to make announcement on Site C Dam

First Nations and environmental groups will be listening closely to the B.C. government today.

The province’s Energy and Mines minister is expected to make an announcement about the controversial Site C Dam project on the Peace River in B.C.

The Athabasca Chipewyan and Mikisew Cree First Nations filed a legal challenge in federal court on Nov. 12 against the approval of the project.

They argue it may drop water levels on the Peace-Athabasca Delta, and threaten wildlife, vegetation and members’ access to the area.

MCFN is also leading a petition to add Wood Buffalo National Park to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in Danger. The band says threats are growing with the proposed dam and oilsands expansion.

The dam would flood 5,550 hectares of land. At a cost of $7.9 billion, the B.C. Hydro project would generate power for an estimate 450,000 homes.
