Golden Years Society petitions for Aging in Place at Willow Square

The Golden Years Society of Fort McMurray has begun an online petition for an Aging in Place facility at the downtown Willow Square site.

“Please Support the Seniors of Wood Buffalo – Stop Wood Buffalo Housing from developing a Community Campus on Willow Square.  A Community campus is NOT a Seniors Aging In Place Community. Wood Buffalo Housing says the land is too valuable to use for Seniors Housing so we have to ask “What’s A Senior Worth“?  Funny, we were good enough to be used to get the land for free though,” says the petition.

In November, 2014, the Federal Government transferred its 75 per cent share of the Willow Square property to the Alberta Social Housing Corporation, which already owned the remaining 25 per cent. The province then transferred the land to the Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation (WBHD) at no cost. WBHD also received $3 million in provincial funding towards the project from the province.

The petition is asking for Mayor and Council to step in and stop the Wood Buffalo Housing Community Campus.

It already has over 1,000 signatures.
