A fugitive with several outstanding Canada-wide warrants and 16 charges including one for a fatal hit and run was arrested at an oilsands site north of Fort McMurray yesterday.

Wood Buffalo RCMP arrested 25-year-old, Abdullahi Mohamoud of Missisauga, Ontario, yesterday.

An Inside Halton.com  report says Mohamoud was working as an apprentice welder at the Husky Sunrise project when a co-worker recognized his face from past media coverage and then phoned police.

“We were given information from someone who worked with the individual and was able to identify him through the media release that was sent out and the picture that was provided, and through that we were able to confirm that he was working at camp north of Fort McMurray,” said Constable Ashley Quallie, of the Wood Buffalo RCMP.

According to a release by the Peel Regional Police in Missisauga, on Thursday May. 19, 2011, Mohamoud was pumping gas into his beige Nissan Altima at a local Petro Canada. Reports say Mohamoud tried to flee the gas station without paying.

The lone attendant at the station at the time was Hashem Atifef Rad. Police say Rad chased after the vehicle and caught up to it as it was leaving the gas station lot. Reports say Mohamoud hit Rad with his car. The victim died of his injuries on May. 20, 2011.

After five months of investigating, Peel Regional Police arrested a then 22-year-old Mohamoud. He was charged with failing to remain causing death, criminal negligence causing death, theft under $5,000.00 and breach of recognizance. He fled the province before making his first court appearance on Oct. 27, 2011.

“He will likely face the charges in the Western provinces prior to being returned here. Extensive effort has gone into locating Mr. Mohamoud, and as a result of that effort a tip has led to his arrest,” said Constable Fiona Thivierge, of the Peel Regional Police.

Mohamoud  has allegedly been using numerous aliases over the past few years and he’s considered to be violent and an escape risk. Mohamoud is currently in police custody and was scheduled to appear in a Fort McMurray court for his first appearance this morning.

He had arrest warrants issued by the Peel Regional Police in 2011, 2012 for the following charges:

– Criminal Negligence Causing Death

– Theft under $5,000

– Breach of Recognizance

– Fail to remain at the scene of an accident

– Fail to attend court

– Suspended driving

Mohamoud also had outsanding warrants from the Edmonton Police Service in 2008 and 2013 for the following charges:

– Sexual Assault

– Sexual Interference

– Utter threats to cause bodily harm x2

– Unauthorized possession of a firearm

– Permit escape

– Fail to comply with conditions of release x3

– Fail to appear in court

An Edmonton Police Spokesperson says the man threatened an Edmonton Transit Peace Officer with a gun on Jan. 1, 2013.

“The incident occurred when a transit officer had arrested another male for trespass at Churchill Station,” says Spokesperson Scott Pattison in an email. “The two suspects immediately fled the scene. The Trespassing male was arrested by Downtown Division Beat members within five hours of escaping lawful custody. The male who produced the gun and assisted in the escape is still at large.”

Edmonton Police could not immediately provide information on the incident that lead to the sexual assault charges.
