Wood Buffalo RCMP on scene of deadly Highway 881 crash at km 235.
Police say a pick-up truck hit an oncoming wide load. One person was pronounced dead on scene, another was rushed to the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre.
“The collision is still under investigation,” says Const. Ashley Quallie. It’s unknown right now if drugs or alcohol were a factor, but it’s not believed to be necessarily the conditions of the road.”
The person in hospital was the passenger in the truck. That person is currently in stable condition and is speaking with investigators. Police are in the process of notifying family members about the death and they’re not releasing anymore information about the driver.
Both lanes of the highway are closed. Police ask drivers to take alternate routes as it may be a few hours before it reopens.
