Twin Arenas on the fast track

The twin arenas for the Northside Rec Centre are being fast tracked. Funds for the project were already approved in during budget talks late last year, and council voted to move forward with the project last night. Councillor Sheldon Germain tabled a motion that will get the Twin Arenas under construction this spring.

“It’s 98 per cent completed in design and the ice user badly need the arena space,” said Councillor Sheldon Germain.

The arenas are slated to be complete by fall 2016. Members also  voted for the largest facility design for the centre.

The $178.2 million project spans 251,701 sq. ft.

It includes an aquatics centre, fitness facility, lease space for bowling and a library. The RMWB will also fund the $6.5 million to fully develop plans for the building.

Conceptual designs for the entire facility are expected this fall, when the project will be up for bids from developers.
