2015 declared “The Year of Sport”

With athletes and camera crews flooding to the region this year, Mayor Melissa Blake has officially declared 2015 “The Year of Sport” in Wood Buffalo.

“Wood Buffalo has a history of hosting sporting events, but this year is looking very exciting,” states Blake in a news release. “We have provincial, national and international events coming up in 2015. The eyes of the sporting world will be on us throughout the year. Our state of the art facilities will be on display, but more importantly our tremendous community spirit will be in the spotlight!”

The first major event coming to the region is the ACAC Men’s Basketball Championship, hosted by the Keyano Huskies from March 5-7. Up next is the Grand Slam of Curling Syncrude Elite 10 from March 19-22 and the 2015 Tim Hortons Canadian Ringette Championship March 29-April 4.

From April 25 – May 3, the region will host the 2015 Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup. The much anticipated Northern Kickoff presented by Shell is on June 10-13. FC Edmonton plays San Antonio July 5 and comes back to welcome Ottawa Aug. 2.

It all leads up to the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games from Aug. 7-16. For schedules and ticket information visit rmwb.ca/yearofsport.
