Shell Place to host Argonauts & Eskimos in regular season CFL game

The Regional Recreation Corporation (RRC) announced today that Shell Place will host the Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Eskimos at SMS Equipment Field for the first ever regular season CFL game in Wood Buffalo on Jun. 27, 2015.

It’s a game that will feature the Argonauts as the home team, and the Eskimos as the visitors.

The Argonauts are being pushed out of Toronto due to the 2015 Pan-Am Games.

“We are happy to do our part in expanding the interest and reach of the CFL into Northern Alberta, one of the key economic areas of our country, by participating in the Northern Kickoff,” said David Bedford, Toronto Argonauts Sr. Vice President, Business Operations. “We invite our fans from Toronto, as well as those now living in the Wood Buffalo Region to don their Double Blue and join usi n Fort McMurray for this historic event.”

According to RRC release today’s announcement comes off the back of the tremendous community response to the Northern Kickoff, featuring the Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders in a CFL exhibition game on Jun. 13, 2015.

It’s also possible that the Eskimos would play a third game in Wood Buffalo, an exhibition match against the BC Lions, both teams will have limited access to their home stadiums thanks to the FIFA Women’s World Cup of Soccer.

Lowell Ullrich of the Vancouver Province reported that the Lions are considering using Shell Place field  for their game if they opt to not use UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium.

“We are delighted to welcome the Argonauts to Fort McMurray as the home team for this game,” said Michael Cachia, Chair of the Board of Directors of the RRC. “Thanks to the strong support of the community and our many partners and the vision and guidance of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Mayor and Council as we developed Shell Place, we are able to present exciting new opportunities in sport, recreation and event experiences to the Wood Buffalo region.”
