Councillors will hear about what went down in the cage in Fort McMurray. The Combative Sports Commission, which oversees mixed martial arts events, is reporting to council during today’s Administrative Briefing.

Executive Director Sandy Bowman pushed for a bylaw to create the commission and it officially regulated its first two events hosted by Prestige FC last year. The commission estimates about 1,300 people took a seat at each event to watch local fighters on the card against athletes from the U.S., Saskatchewan, B.C., Alberta, and Quebec.

Along with the local draws there’s also been some celebrity MMA stars such as official “Big” John McCarthy who’ve made appearances. The commission also has the support from Wood Buffalo RCMP who provided a statement:

“We are pleased to report that neither event generated any increase in police calls for service which was assisted by the use of private security companies. We look forward to continued communications about upcoming events and positive relationship with the Commission.”

The commission says it generated $50,033.11 in revenue. After all the expenses, it has $9,520.54 in the bank.
