Health board dismisses Dr. O'Connor

The doctor who first flagged elevated rates of cancer in Fort Chipewyan is no longer needed in the community.

Dr. John O’Connor was relieved of his duties on Friday. The Nunee Health Board Society notified the physician through a letter.

“Please be advised the Nuneee Health Board Society no longer requires your professional services to provide any patient consultation or on call services to the staff at the Fort Chipewyan Health Centre,” the letter says. “In addition, you have no authority to speak to or represent the Nunee health Board Society in any way to any other individual, party or entity,”

In an interview with the Edmonton Journal, Mikisew Cree First Nation Chief Steve Courtoreille says the doctor hasn’t been in Fort Chipewyan in years.
